Ask the folks in Macon,
Georgia about Vineville Avenue, and they’re
likely to tell you even today that it’s the road that goes on
forever: you can get on it downtown near Mama Louise’s H & H
and from there you can traverse practically the entire city, all the
way to the far northwest side, without ever making a turn.
Neither the
road nor the city has changed very much since that day back in December
of 1969 when Linda Oakley walked into the offices
of Day Realty and put down her $225 deposit to rent the 3-story Grand
Tudor house at 2321 Vineville Avenue for herself and her husband
Berry and their baby daughter Brittany. Linda didn’t know then,
of course, that the rental would eventually come to be known to Allman
Brothers fans worldwide as The Big House. And even though she rented
it knowing that Duane and Gregg and the others would live there,
too,
she probably had no idea she was making history that day. All she
knew at the beginning is that the little apartment one-bedroom apartment
she and Berry were living in was way too small for the three of them—especially
when sister Candy was sleeping on the sofa in the living room—and
it was time to find something bigger.
Come along with us as we relive
it all again through the eyes of Linda Oakley and writer Kirsten
West: the early days..…..the glory
days……the final days…..and today.
